What to Do With Your Life When You Feel Lost

The one powerful question that has helped me (and my clients) figure out their next chapter—again and again.

Have you ever found yourself asking, “What am I doing with my life?” That sense that something needs to shift—but not knowing where to start or what the next step is?

Maybe you’re feeling the nudge that something more is out there for you. You might sense that your current season isn’t quite right anymore, that you’re meant for something different… but you can’t quite put your finger on what. That uncertainty can feel frustrating and heavy, especially when you’re someone who wants to grow, evolve, and make aligned choices.

If that sounds like where you are right now, I want to offer you one simple but powerful question that has guided me through seasons of confusion, pivots, and reinvention more than any other. It’s the question I come back to every time I need clarity or inspiration—at the start of a new year, on my birthday, or in the quiet in-between moments of transition.

It’s this:

If you could have anything… what would you want?

And here’s why it’s so important.

The Answer Doesn’t Have to Be Clear (Yet)

Now before you skip past this thinking, “Yeah, but I don’t know what I want,”—stay with me.

For most people, this question doesn’t unlock a perfectly polished life plan. Not at first.

It might come through as a vague direction. A whisper. A feeling. Or maybe nothing at all yet. That’s okay. The magic is in starting to ask.

Because here’s what happens: once your brain hears the question, it starts looking for answers—even subconsciously. And when you get specific and intentional, the energy you send out becomes a clear, coherent signal. That’s when life begins to respond.

Why Most People Stay Stuck

Here’s the truth: Most people don’t create the life they want because they never define what exactly it looks like. They want “more” or “better”—but they don’t know what more looks like. As Oprah says:

“People get where they want to go because they know where they want to go. Most people don’t know where they want to go.”

Let’s change that today.

Exercise #1: Visualize Your Ideal Day

This is one of the simplest and most powerful tools I return to every year on my birthday, at the New Year, or anytime I need a reset.

Set aside 30 quiet minutes. Close your eyes or start writing. And walk yourself through a full dream day, from the moment you wake up to when your head hits the pillow at night.

Ask yourself:

    • What kind of sheets am I sleeping in?

    • What do I do first thing in the morning?

    • Where am I living—city, countryside, beach, mountains?

    • Who’s with me (if anyone)?

    • What does my work look like? What lights me up during the day?

    • How do I move my body?

    • What’s for dinner? Am I eating out or cooking a nourishing meal (or nachos) at home?

    • What time do I log off—and what does the evening feel like?

Let your imagination go wild. You’re not allowed to edit based on what’s “realistic.” This is your DREAM.

When I first did this years ago at a retreat, I saw a vision of myself as my own boss. At the time, I was in a corporate job and had no idea how to become an entrepreneur. But that vision planted a seed. Once you get clear, you too will start to notice opportunities you didn’t before. You’ll pay attention to new ideas, invitations, or people that align with the life you’ve envisioned.

Exercise #2: Bullet Out Your Dream Life

If you’re more of a linear thinker, try this instead.

List out the major areas of your life—like:

    • Career

    • Health

    • Relationships

    • Finances

    • Fun + Creativity

    • Home

    • Spirituality

Then write a few bullet points under each one describing what the ideal version looks like.

For example:

Health

    • Walks five times per week

    • Feels confident in a swimsuit

    • Can hike a hill without getting winded

    • Cooks healthy meals at home

Career

    • Makes $10,000 (or $100,000!) per month

    • Works with aligned clients

    • Has full schedule flexibility

    • Creates inspiring content every day

Whatever matters to you—this is your life. Your list can be as detailed or as free-flowing as you like.

Why This Actually Works

Here’s what I believe: Once you get clear, you become magnetic to the right opportunities, teachers, and ideas. You start spotting classes, podcasts, mentors, or events that align. You notice people living the life you want—and you start taking steps, even small ones, in that direction.

You might not know how it will all come together. That’s okay. You just have to name the vision and start showing up for it. One step at a time.

Life Will Meet You Halfway (But You Have to Start)

Of course, nothing changes if nothing changes. You have to become the person who could live that dream life. That might mean taking a risk, facing a fear, or making a change that stretches you. That might mean putting yourself in rooms where the people you want to be like hang out—even if (and especially if) if feels scary at first.

But when you do? Life expands to meet you there.

So here’s your assignment this week:

    • Block off 30 minutes.

    • Ask yourself the question: If I could have anything, what would I want?

    • Either write your dream day in detail—or bullet it out by category.

    • And start noticing what life sends your way.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to be open enough to start asking the right questions. 💛 If you feel called, leave a comment of one thing your dream day includes. I’d love to hold the vision with you.
