If you’ve ever set out to build a new habit—whether for your health, your business, your mindset, or your dream—but you just couldn’t seem to stick with it, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, too. But through writing books, launching businesses, starting a podcast, and traveling to all seven continents… I’ve learned a few simple hacks that make building new habits feel way less clunky—and way more doable.
If you’ve ever wondered how to make new habits stick, these are the exact tricks I use to create consistency in my life. Whether you’re trying to drink more water, show up for a new routine, or finally commit to your dream, these habit hacks actually work—and I still use them every single day.
Simple Hacks to Make New Habits Actually Stick
1. Make the Habit Intrusive
This is one of my favorite tricks for building better habits. You take the habit you’re trying to build—and you physically put it in your way so you can’t ignore it.
Let’s say you have a health goal. Want to take your supplements daily? Put them in front of your front door. Want to drink more water? Place your water bottle right in front of your computer mouse so you physically have to move it to work. Some other ideas for how to make a habit intrusive:
- Gym clothes at the foot of your bed
- A green juice in the center of the fridge
- Your gratitude journal on your pillow
- Your walking shoes on the driver’s seat
- Healthy bars in your car for when you’re ravenous on the way home
The point is: your brain sees it, gets triggered, and starts to associate it with action. When it’s hard to forget the habit, it’s easier to follow through.
2. Pair a New Habit With an Existing One
This method is often called “habit stacking,” and it’s one of the simplest ways to make a new habit stick. Instead of building something entirely new from scratch, you just layer your new habit onto something you’re already doing.
For example, I love going on walks. So I’ve started pairing my walks with meditations or audiobooks. It helps me stay consistent with personal development without taking up more time in my day.
Easy ways to pair habits:
- Do affirmations while brushing your teeth
- Listen to a business podcast on your commute
- Dry brush before every shower
- Watch a training while on a spin bike
- Add 5 minutes of journaling while sipping your morning coffee
It’s the same time block—but double the impact. This is one of the most effective ways to create habits that last.
3. Work With Your Natural Schedule
This one changed everything for me. If you’ve been trying to become a morning person for years and it just hasn’t stuck… maybe you’re not meant to be a morning person! The truth is, most people don’t stick to new habits because they’re forcing a routine that doesn’t match their natural rhythm. And guess what… you don’t need to do things how everyone else seemingly does them to be successful.
I’ve found that I do my best creative work before noon. So I structure my workday to reflect that—getting big projects done early, and saving admin tasks for the afternoon. It’s made me so much more productive without needing extra motivation late in the day.
Ask yourself:
- When do I have the most energy?
- What time of day feels easiest to focus?
- How can I align my dream work with my natural rhythm?
Working with your energy—not against it—is one of the most underrated secrets to building better habits.
4. Do It in a Way You Actually Love
This might be the most important one of all. If you want to build a habit that lasts, you have to like the way you’re doing it.
Hate running? Try dance workouts. Not a fan of writing? Use voice memos or start a podcast. Hate being on video? Build a brand on Pinterest or through written storytelling.
It’s not about what works for everyone else—it’s about what works for you. When you enjoy the process, you’re way more likely to show up consistently. That consistency builds confidence, momentum, and results.
Think about:
- What feels energizing instead of draining?
- What formats do I naturally enjoy?
- How could I reimagine this habit in a way that’s fun?
Finding a way you love is the key to habit success—and you’ll be amazed how fast your results compound when it no longer feels like a chore.
