The one simple practice I return to whenever I feel stuck, unmotivated, or creatively blocked.
Have you ever felt like you’ve just lost your mojo? Like you’re stuck in a rut, unsure what your passion is anymore, or how to get that spark back? You’re not alone—and if that’s where you are today, I want to share a practice that completely shifted things for me. It’s simple. It’s fun. And it’s something I still turn to anytime I need to feel inspired again. Because the truth is, creativity and energy love movement. You don’t always need a grand life overhaul—you just need one small spark.
This is how I find it every time.

Try One New Thing (Yes, Just One)
Whenever I start to feel blocked or uninspired, I go back to this: I try one new thing.
That’s it.
I make a list of anything—even the most random little things—I’ve wanted to try. Here are some examples from my own list to get you started:
- Visit a new coffee shop or tourist spot in your city
- Take a cooking class, yoga class, or dance workshop
- Learn a new language or start a creative hobby like painting or pottery
- Go rock climbing, kayaking, or hiking somewhere new
- Announce your business, pitch yourself, or publish a vulnerable post
- Book a trip (or even just dream-plan one!)
- Sit at a bar alone and enjoy your own company
Some of the best breakthroughs of my life started with one new thing a month. I didn’t even realize at the time how much it would change me—but it did.
The Rule? It Has to Be Outside Your Comfort Zone
The common thread? I had to feel a little nervous to do it. That’s how I knew it would shift something.
Sometimes it was bigger physical things like rock climbing, kayaking the Puget Sound, or doing a sprint triathlon. Other times, it was smaller things—like learning to make a certain meal, having an important conversation, pitching a dream client, or writing a heartfelt letter.
Each time, the same pattern happened. I’d feel nervous leading up to it. My fear would spike right before it started. Then I’d be in the middle of it—doing the thing—and I’d think, “I’m so glad I showed up.”
That experience repeated so many times that I started to see a bigger truth: fear always passes. It peaks and then it softens. And on the other side? Confidence. Creativity. Pride. Joy.
What Happens When You Try New Things
Over time, this practice helped me:
- Recognize patterns in my fear (and stop letting it hold me back)
- Build confidence that I could do new things and survive them
- Feel more creative and inspired with each new experience
- Discover new passions, business ideas, and even people that changed my life
- Collect a treasure trove of stories (some hilarious, some humbling) 🙃
Honestly, it’s where so much of my business, book, and podcast began—from random one-off adventures. Just by doing something different, and letting it change me.
Often the Best Ideas Come in a New Experience
Here’s the kicker: when you’re not trying so hard to force inspiration, that’s usually when it comes.
I’ve had business ideas pop into my mind while running a half marathon. I’ve had epiphanies in the middle of solo trips somewhere new, or while laughing at myself in a hot Bikram class gone wrong (yes, that story’s in my book).
New experiences shake things loose. They move energy. They open you up to downloads you didn’t even know were waiting to come through.
And even if the experience is awkward or messy or totally embarrassing?
It still teaches you something. It makes you braver. It gives you a story. And it proves to you—you can feel the fear and do it anyway.
To Feel Inspired You Have to Do Something New
If you’re in a season where you feel a little stuck, here’s your permission slip:
- Make your “One New Thing” list
- Schedule time once a month (or more often!)
- Try one thing that stretches you just a bit
- Let the experience show you something new about yourself
To feel inspired again, you have to create space for inspiration. It doesn’t show up when things stay the same. It shows up when you show up for new possibilities.
You’ve got this. Truly.
So tell me in the comments—what’s your “one new thing” for this month? What’s calling to you, even if it’s a little outside your comfort zone?
And then… go do it.
You never know what (or who) you’ll find on the other side.
