What Brings You Back to Health

Have you ever stopped to think about what truly brings you back to health—what makes you feel alive, energetic, and at your best? I came across a quote years ago that has always stuck with me:

“You can tell a creature’s natural habitat by what brings it back to health.”

Just like animals thrive in their natural environments, we humans have our own natural habitats that help us feel our healthiest and most vibrant. Whether it’s your physical health, relationships, career, or even the structure of your day, understanding what brings you back to health can give you clues as to how you’re designed to thrive (and how to give yourself the setup to do so).

Your Health: What Truly Energizes You?

We’re all constantly bombarded by health advice. From fitness routines to diet plans, it can feel overwhelming to figure out what’s right for us. But the key is to listen to your own body. You can tell what your natural best health plan is by what makes you feel your best. Ask yourself:

  • What helps you sleep the best? Is it going to bed earlier, reducing screen time, or practicing mindfulness before sleep?
  • What makes you feel energized? Think about what foods, exercise routines, or daily habits give you lasting energy.
  • What makes you feel strong and vibrant? This could be a particular workout, a balanced meal, or simply spending time outdoors.

If a health trend or routine makes you feel worse, even if it’s marketed as healthy, it might not be healthy for YOU. Trust your body to guide you back to what feels good and helps you thrive.

Relationships: Who Makes You Feel at Peace?

Relationships are another area where this idea of finding your natural habitat applies. Think about the people in your life and how they make you feel.

I remember a time in my 20s when I had two very different friend groups. One group was exciting but left me feeling drained, while the other group made me feel relaxed and accepted. Many of us have had experiences where we’ve dated someone and felt stressed, anxious, or even put on weight, only to lose the weight almost effortlessly and return to our vibrance once the relationship ends.

You can gauge the health of your relationships by noticing how you feel after spending time with someone:

  • Do you feel more energized or drained?
  • Do you feel supported, relaxed, and at peace with this person?
  • Does your relationship add to your sense of health and well-being, or create anxiety?

Healthy relationships help bring you back to your natural state of balance and vitality, just like your health habits do. The people who make you feel secure, loved, and seen are the ones who contribute to your well-being.

Career: Does Your Work Light You Up?

We’ve all had jobs that drained our energy and others that made the days fly by. Finding work that aligns with your passions and strengths can make all the difference. Just like animals thrive in their natural environment, you will thrive when your work feels aligned with who you are and what you enjoy.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you feel fulfilled by your work, or do you dread it?
  • Does your work make you feel energized or exhausted?
  • Are you challenged in a way that feels invigorating, or are you constantly stressed?

If your job is taking a toll on your health or well-being, consider small shifts that could bring you closer to work that feels more aligned with your natural strengths and passions.

Daily Structure: What’s Your Ideal Routine?

Your daily habits and routine also play a huge role in your overall well-being. As you get to know yourself better, you’ll notice patterns in how your energy fluctuates throughout the day. For me, I know I’m most productive in the morning, and my decision-making isn’t as sharp by evening. Recognizing this has allowed me to structure my day around when I’m at my best.

Here are a few questions to guide you:

  • When do you feel most energized during the day? Are you a morning person or do you come alive in the evening?
  • What activities make you feel your best? A morning walk, a midday break, or winding down with a book at night?
  • How do you recharge? Whether it’s exercise, meditation, or simply sitting in quiet, pay attention to what brings you back to balance.

Finding the routine that works for you is key to thriving in your daily life. You don’t need to follow anyone else’s schedule or habits—what matters is figuring out what helps you feel your best.

Listening to Your Body’s Signals

Ultimately, your body, mind, and emotions are constantly giving you feedback on what’s working and what isn’t. If you feel low on energy, stressed, or like something’s just off, that’s a sign that something in your environment or routine might need to shift.

Here are a few questions to help you identify what brings you back to health:

  • When do you feel most at peace and energized? Think about moments when you’ve felt calm, clear, and fulfilled.
  • Where do you feel free? In what situations, relationships, or environments do you feel a sense of freedom and lightness?
  • What does alignment feel like for you? When you’re in flow, what does it feel like in your body? For me, it’s a sense of calm confidence, like a weighted blanket but in the best way possible—grounded, steady, and clear.

When you tune into these feelings, you’ll start to see patterns that point you toward your natural habitat—where you thrive and feel at your healthiest.

Structuring Your Own Best Natural Habitat

At the end of the day, finding what brings you back to health is about paying attention to what makes you feel alive and aligned. Just like plants and animals have their natural environments that help them thrive, you too have a unique combination of habits, people, and routines that make you feel your best.

Take time to reflect on what those things are for you. Maybe it’s a walk in the morning, a nourishing meal, deep conversations with loved ones, or work that feels meaningful. Whatever it is, trust that your body and mind are guiding you toward the things that will help you flourish.

What brings you back to health? Let that be your guide as you move through life, making decisions that support your well-being and help you thrive in your own natural habitat.
