How to Turn Your Passion to Profits

For years inside corporate America, I spent my nights and weekends trying to figure out how to turn my passion to profits. I wrote blogs, did graphic design projects on the side, and even photographed healthy recipes for a food writer. But for the longest time, I couldn’t figure out how to get paid more than just a little here and there.

That is, until I found freelance writing. Suddenly, I went from scraping by to being able to earn $50 to $100/hour writing all day. And the good news is: I’m not holding anything back if you want to do the same. Below are 3 steps to get paid for your passion.

3 Steps to Turn Your Passion to Profits

If I could go back in time, here are 3 steps I would take to go from passion to profit.

 1. Make a List of the Things You’re Passionate About

In order to make money for your passions, you have to know what you’re working with. Open a notepad or document on your computer and make a list of things you’re passionate about. Think through things you spend your free time doing, things people ask for your advice around (like cooking or DIY), things you have an uncanny memory or natural ability for, and things you would love to get paid to learn about. Your career, education, or background also counts if you enjoy the industry!

2. Research Companies in That Industry

Then, choose one of those industries and brainstorm a list of at least 25 businesses in that industry. Think big and small, national and local.

For example, if one of your passions is nutrition, then you could make a list of healthy food companies, wellness websites, local nutritionists, online health coaches, and even hospitals. Use Google and/or hashtags on Instagram if you’re stumped (e.g. #healthcoach).

3. Learn How to Write to Begin Earning Up to $100/Hour

Your next step is a little more involved, but once you master it, you will be able to make a living from your passion. Learn how to write for business via online articles, webinars, or courses like mine (Content Business Blueprint). If you can learn beyond just writing basics—and also some content marketing strategy like I teach—then you will be more of a strategic partner to brands, stand out from the average writer, and position yourself to earn higher rates from the start.

Now, you can pitch every one of those brands on your list, offering to help them with written content like blog posts, social media, email newsletters, and more. There are MILLIONS of businesses out there—thousands in every industry—who have unlimited written content to write these days. Imagine being able to earn a living writing about an industry you love, while giving yourself the freedom to work from anywhere, choose your own schedule, and do work that fulfills you.

Get Paid to Write About Your Passions

Once I found freelance writing, I was suddenly able to make thousands per week writing about things I genuinely loved and would’ve spent my free time learning about anyway. And even more, I felt fulfilled helping other people learn about those brands, products, and services through my words. No matter what industry you’re excited about, there are tens of thousands of business owners in it, hoping a writer like you will take some of their written content off their plate, and help put their message into words.
