What Business Should I Start?

Last week, we chatted about how to find your passion or purpose in 2025. Sometimes, you want to start something purely for more joy or fulfillment, but sometimes, you feel the nudge to turn it into more. If that’s you, below are a few ideas to help you answer the question: “Which business should I start?”

Done-for-You vs. Coaching Business

Most businesses fall into two main buckets: done-for-you and coaching.

Done-for-You Businesses

Done-for-you businesses are when you DO a service FOR someone else, whether that someone is an actual person or another business. For example, popular done-for-you businesses include graphic designers (who DO graphic design FOR another business or person), copywriters (who DO website copy for FOR another business or person), as well as landscapers, interior designers, accountants, and virtual assistants.

Depending on the type of done-for-you business, this can be a great option for anyone who loves working behind-the-scenes on projects, since you typically don’t spend a ton of time on calls (beyond maybe introductory ones or client check-ins). You tend to have control over your own schedule—when and how you work to meet deadlines.

On the other side of done-for-you businesses are…

Coaching Businesses

A coaching business is where you are a coach, mentor, or consultant to someone else. For example, you could be a nutrition coach, fitness coach, financial coach, relationship coach, etc.

Typically, coaches spend most of their day interacting with clients—either by phone, video, or messaging—so it’s a great business for someone who loves working with people, and doesn’t mind being on the phone or Zoom for much of the day.

However, within both of these options, there is room to structure your schedule and business the way that works for you. (That’s partly what being your own boss is about, right?!)

Beyond Traditional Businesses: Other Options

We live in a fascinating time where there are people literally out there making millions from posting 90-second videos on social media. Below are some routes you may want to consider that aren’t necessarily traditional businesses, but still have the potential to bring in good money, get clients, support a more traditional biz, and spread the message you believe in.

Podcast or YouTube Channel

If you love the idea of connecting with a community over conversations, then podcasts or videos could be right for you. Try this: when it comes to your passion, jot down 10 to 15 tips that you could share. Each of those could be a weekly episode or video—you now have your first 3 months of episode ideas! 🙌 By simply sharing the things you already love to talk about, or even having conversations with guests in your topic of choice, you can create an outlet to share what you love.

Podcasts and YouTube videos are beautiful ways to grow a community, share your expertise, and even earn income as your platforms grow, through advertisements or sponsors.

Book or Blog

If you prefer writing, then a book or blog could be the channel for you. Similar to a podcast or YouTube channel, brainstorm the lessons you’ve learned, stories you could tell, and things you could teach about a topic you’re passionate about. Each one could become a chapter of a book, or a blog post on your website, which can impact the lives of countless others reading it. You can even earn money from book sales or running ads on your blog as your readership grows.

Non-Profit or Movement

Even if you don’t want a business in the traditional sense, you could still spread awareness for a cause by starting a non-profit, hosting educational events, or raising donations. Nonprofits can bring in money from grants or donations, using those funds to educate others and make change.

Social Media Account

There has never been more opportunity to start a business and become your own boss—yes, even from posting on social media. As you grow a social media account, your can bring in money from sponsorships, where you promote a product or brand you believe in, in exchange for money. You can also earn free (a.k.a. gifted) products, such as travel, skincare, technology, or merchandise, depending on your industry.

For example, maybe you’re passionate about parenting, travel, DIY projects, or women’s financial empowerment. Consider creating an Instagram or TikTok and sharing behind-the-scenes, advice, or how-to’s, to grow a community and even earn an income over time.

So, which of these ideas calls to you?
