What a Copywriter Does: What a Day Looks Like
Ever wondered what a copywriter does? While every day is different, below are a few key components a copywriter typically encounters day to day.
Writing Copy
No surprise here: most days involve writing! Depending on the kind of work you do, you could write social media posts, blog posts, email newsletters, or web copy. (It’s up to you as the business owner to decide which kinds of clients and industries you love!)
Many people coming from corporate careers report that it’s rewarding to finally work with the kinds of businesses they’re passionate about—from local coffee shops to favorite health brands or non-profit organizations. By writing for them, you help them communicate their message via words, grow their business, and help people find the products or services that will improve their lives.
Editing Your Work
After finishing your first drafts and taking a break for an iced coffee, a walk around the neighborhood, or a midday workout class, it’s time to come back and fine-tune your content. Calls with Clients
One of the benefits of building a copywriting business is that you can design your days as you wish. You can fill your days with collaborative calls or have rarely any calls at all. But once in a while, you’ll usually want to jump on calls with your clients to discuss upcoming projects or hear more about their vision.
Managing the Business Side
As a business owner, you also get the fun of managing the business side. This could include creating invoices or keeping track of project timelines. There are a variety of free tools that make time management and project organization super simple. (Read more about my favorite free copywriter tools.) Using these tools can help streamline operations, giving you more time to focus on writing (and earning income)!
Getting Clients
Especially in the beginning of your business, you may spend some time acquiring new copywriting clients and building your client base. There are a variety of ways to do this, from networking to freelance websites, referrals, and more. I teach a new way each week in my online copywriting course, Bright Life Biz. The good news is that, once you book full with recurring work, you can spend much less time marketing the rest of your business.

To summarize, your day as a writer looks like a mix of writing, editing, brainstorming, messaging clients, and managing the business. Because you can work on the hours you choose, from the location you choose, you can squeeze in appointments, workout classes, errands, or time with your family. As the business owner, it’s up to you and how you want to design your business and life. Project by project, your writing will connect brands with the people who need them, while making a solid income for you and those you love.
