3 Things to Focus on as a New Entrepreneur

Below are three essential lessons that I wish I had known when I first started as a new entrepreneur. I hope these lessons help you find success faster—without the trial and error it took me!

1. Get Support & Mentorship

Building a successful business doesn’t mean you have to do it all on your own. In fact, seeking guidance and mentorship can significantly accelerate your progress. While hiring a team might not be feasible in the beginning, investing in a mentor or personal coach can make a world of difference. I hired a business coach around a year and a half into my business, which more than tripled my income. Having someone with experience to guide you, share insights, and provide personalized advice can save you time (and help you hold all the emotions that come with being a new business owner).

It’s important to find a mentor who resonates with you and can help you navigate the challenges you’ll face. Look for someone who can provide not just a formula, but also tailor their guidance to your individual interests, blocks, and desires. If you don’t have a mentor yet, supporting yourself with a supportive community of like-minded individuals, whether through social media, networking groups, or online communities, can also provide a strong foundation for your entrepreneurial journey.

2. Trust the Timing of Your Journey

When starting out, there can be immense pressure to achieve rapid success, especially when comparing your progress to others on social media. I wish I wouldn’t have put so much pressure on myself to succeed right away, and instead remembered that building a business takes time. Be patient with yourself and avoid rushing the process.

Whether you’re still juggling a full-time job, taking on freelance work, or slowly gaining clients, celebrate each step forward. Progress is progress, no matter how small. Embrace the experience and give yourself permission to take the time you need to build a strong foundation for your business.

3. Focus on Revenue vs. Behind-the-Scenes Work

In the early stages of entrepreneurship, it’s easy to get caught up in building the perfect website, crafting the ideal social media presence, or creating a flawless product or service. However, what truly matters is generating revenue and serving clients. Instead of getting stuck in the cycle of perfectionism (or hiding tinkering on behind-the-scenes work) focus on getting clients, making sales, and refining your offerings based on real-world feedback.

Be visible on social media, host events, reach out directly to potential clients, and be open to new opportunities. It’s scary to show up visibly, but it’s what leads to actual income, which is essential for your business to thrive and grow.

As you navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, apply these lessons to your journey! Celebrate every milestone, whether it’s landing your first client, overcoming a fear, or witnessing positive results from your efforts. Acknowledge your accomplishments and reward yourself for your hard work and dedication. Surround yourself with a supportive community, and always keep in mind that good things take time.
