3 Ways to Get Freelance Writing Jobs — Without LinkedIn!

If you want to get freelance writing jobs without using LinkedIn, watch this video for three simple strategies! I know it can be daunting to use LinkedIn if you’re currently employed by another company or building a copywriting business on the side. Fortunately, it’s not essential to use LinkedIn (or social media at all) to build a successful freelance writing business. I scaled my copywriting agency to multiple 6-figures in its first year without using LinkedIn or social media, so below are a few ideas for how can do so, too!

Ways to Book Freelance Writing Jobs — No LinkedIn Required

For aspiring writers looking to break into the world of freelancing or content creation, the prospect of using LinkedIn as a client acquisition strategy can be daunting, especially if you’re currently employed in another field or company. However, there’s good news! Building a successful writing business doesn’t have to rely solely on LinkedIn. Here are a few alternative strategies to help you land clients and grow your copywriting business without depending on any social media platform.

Tried-and-True Networking

Networking remains a timeless and underrated method to connect with potential clients. You may be wondering where to meet people beyond your usual. network, but it’s actually quite possible. Seek out local networking events, brunches, or happy hours where you can introduce yourself as a copywriter. Face-to-face interactions can build trust and credibility much faster than online approaches. You’d be surprised how many business owners are in constant need of help with content marketing, making networking events an excellent opportunity to find potential clients.

Or, if you prefer online events, platforms like Eventbrite and Meetup now offer a plethora of virtual networking opportunities. Students in online copywriter course have booked multiple clients (and even been invited back to speak!) from attending even just one online networking meetup.

Freelance Sites

Utilizing freelance websites (such as Upwork) can be an excellent way to secure your first clients. On these platforms, businesses actively seek writers for their content needs. You can pitch your services directly to brands without ever needing to advertise on LinkedIn. Even small initial engagements can lead to recurring work and a rapidly growing client base.

Writing Sample Pitches

Approaching local businesses with a sample of your writing is a clever way to get your foot in the door. (Bonus points: tailor your sample directly to them to catch their attention even more!) This approach showcases your value upfront without asking for anything in return, increasing the likelihood of a response—and a positive one! Brands appreciate the chance to get to know your writing style without commitment. It’s a win-win situation, and many businesses may turn into long-term clients based on the value you provide.

There are countless ways to book freelance writing jobs without relying solely on LinkedIn or traditional social media channels. By embracing the power of networking, exploring freelance websites, and offering sample writing to local businesses, you can build a thriving writing career. (And those are just a few ideas—every week I teach another one in my freelance writer program.)

Whether you’re working a 9-to-5 job or already contemplating the leap into full-time freelancing, these strategies will help you take the first steps toward achieving your dream of being your own boss and creating a sustainable income from your passion for writing. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and experiment with different methods until you find the approach that works best for you.
