3 Tips for a Price Increase as a Copywriter

1. Know That Good Bosses Look Out for Their People

Any decent manager is going to look out for their people and fight to increase their rates over time, because that only reflects the value someone has gained from more experience. So while these conversations may not always be comfortable, they are your right and responsibility as your own boss!

If it helps, look at them as annual or bi-annual events and set a calendar reminder now. Businesses are used to budgeting conversations (and have them with their own employees) so by giving yourself a calendar reminder, you can have these conversations when the time comes, and work to justify your price increase during the time in between.

2. Demonstrate How Your Value Has Grown

Share with your clients the ways in which you’ve grown throughout the year, new certifications you’ve earned, efficiencies you’ve gained, or projects you’ve worked on (that you have permission to share). That way, they’ll be able to clearly see how your new rates reflect the added value you provide.

Everyone gains experience over an entire year. You can’t expect clients to be privy to all you’ve worked on over the course of a year, so make a list of your accomplishments to catch them up to speed and easily justify your value.

3. Give Clients Ample Heads Up

While there is no single time that you can have these discussions, the end of year (around October or November) is a time when most businesses starts to wrap up and prepare for the year ahead. It’s a good time to give your clients a heads up that you will be raising your rates in the new year, so they have time to work it into their budgets, discuss any questions, and plan for the coming year. We talk about all of this and more in my online copywriter course.
