3 Top Copywriting Myths

Copywriting Myth #1: You Need a Degree

Let’s address the first myth that might have been holding you back. No, you don’t need a formal degree to become a copywriter or content writer! While having a degree can be helpful, it is by no means a prerequisite in a career like this. Speaking with from over a decade of experience both inside Corporate America, and outside building my own copywriting business, I’ve seen writers come in without any experience and thrive in this field.

Writing is a skill that can be learned with the right guidance and mentorship, regardless of your academic background. Additionally, whether you were a nurse, educator, accountant, or from any other industry, your unique background can become a powerful advantage in your writing career. Understanding industry-specific terminology and nuances will make you a sought-after expert in crafting content tailored to those fields.

Copywriting Myth #2: Copywriters Don’t Make Much

The second myth is that content writing won’t pay well. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Content writing can be an incredibly lucrative profession, capable of rivaling corporate salaries and even surpassing them. (I personally doubled my 6-figure corporate income with copywriting—something I never thought was possible when I was in my 9 to 5 job.)

As you gain experience, training, and confidence, you can charge higher rates for your services. Many writers earn between $50 to $100 for their services, and I’ve met writers successfully charging $250/hour. Additionally, by incorporating content strategy into your offerings (like search engine optimization) you set yourself apart from other writers and can justify even higher rates. Many of my copywriting students have transitioned from well-paying jobs to copywriting careers, replacing and even tripling their 9 to 5 incomes.

Copywriting Myth #3: You Need Dozens of Clients to Succeed

The final myth I want to break down is the idea that you need dozens of clients to succeed as a content writer. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Instead of juggling a multitude of clients with different needs, focus on a few clients who you can go deeper with. For example, even four clients with 10 hours/week of work is a fully-booked 40-hour/week business. You don’t need tons of clients to succeed, so focus on getting your first few recurring clients, then watching your business grow from those referrals.

At the end of the day, don’t let anyone or anything hold you back from pursuing your passion for writing or your desire to be your own boss. Whether you have a degree or not, content writing and copywriting are skills that can be learned and mastered with the right mentorship, process, and dedication. Embrace your unique background, focus on long-term client partnerships, and create the life and business of your dreams.
